What is the meaning of “region” rather than “urban”?
First, it is not limited to designing an urban space becoming dense and high-rise, and it is to deal with revival of historical townscapes and landscapes, preservation of a community space or maintenance of “garden” and natural environment. Second, it is not only designing a physical space, but also designing a space with elements of the space from reading local community and historical context in its background. The population of Japan is decreasing. Economic growth does not go well, and the city can not grow steadily. “Demolition of the city” has already begun in the countryside and people will begin to live between big cities and rural villages by identifying “quality of place” and choosing.
What is the meaning of “design” rather than “plan”?
The modern era began with excessive delusions on “plan”. In the field of urban and architecture, plans that architects and experts draw top-down with the government were hardly implemented in many cases because of citizens’ furious oppositions. From this bitter experience “Citizen participation” has began, and the possibility of “diverse democracy” has appeared in our country as well. “Architecture” does not mean only a building, but also includes its surrounding environment. In order to acquire skills to proceed dialogues and collaborative works with citizens, you must first be able to design “architecture”. We make strategic planning to solve the problem, and design a space specifically  and conduct understandable presentations.
What these experts in the future need is the ability of sticking the site of town planning, sharing the future image between various citizens with encouraging the citizens’ intentions and making the design real together.
We are conducting research by collaboration with citizens, various experts and students, widely in society not limited to the university. The home laboratory is located at Toyosu Campus, but we also have a “Machinaka Laboratory” as a research base for research activities in Tsukishima Chuo Ward. Not only do we aim to accumulate of research results, but we aim to make sure that research contributes to society reliably and build a network of human resources who practically experienced town planning.
